Melville House publishers Dennis Johnson and Valerie Merians have announced The Jakob Arjouni Fund to Fight Pancreatic Cancer. Created in honor of the late crime novelist who died of pancreatic cancer last January at the age of 48, the fund will be administered by the Lustgarten Foundation.

“We were all devastated,” says Johnson, Arjouni’s American publisher. “Jakob was a really warm and wonderful guy, and he was still in his prime as a writer, so it’s a loss to all of us.”

Arjouni was also the author of several literary novels, including the IMPAC Award finalist Magic Hoffman. But, according to Johnson, he returned to his crime series when he learned he was ill. Melville House will be donating proceeds from its sales of the just-published Brother Kemal, Arjouni’s last book, to the fund.
