Perigee has begun a secretive monthlong campaign to promote Keri Smith's scavenging journal, The Pocket Scavenger, published in May. Throughout August, one special copy of the book will be planted in chosen cities across the country, containing a cryptic letter from Smith with a secret code that will send the finder on his or her next mission.

"The mission is in keeping with the spirit of the book, which is the infinite potential of scavenging" said Melissa Broder, assistant director of publicity and social media at Berkley/NAL/Riverhead/Perigee.

The campaign kicks off August 1 in New York, and over the course of the month hits other cities including Chicago, San Francisco, Brookline, Mass., and wraps up on August 25 in Madison, Conn. On the morning of each scavenge, the special copy's specific location, divided between parks, playgrounds, independent bookstores, mom and pop shops, and libraries in the chosen campaign cities, will be announced via Twitter, Tumblr and on the author's Web site.
