EDC Reports Record Quarter

Earnings jumped 139% at Educational Development Corp. in the third quarter, which ended Nov. 30, 2015, over the same period last year. Profits were $1.2 million in the most recent quarter and were driven by a 123% increase in revenue, which rose to $24.4 million.

Beusse Named F+W CEO

F+W Content + eCommerce (formerly F+W Media) has tapped Tom Beusse to be its new CEO, succeeding David Nussbaum, who left the company in late 2015 after eight years. From 2011 to 2013 Beusse was president of the USA Today Sports Media Group, and he also spent five years as president of the magazine group at Rodale.

Authors Plan Amazon Discussion

Novelist Douglas Preston, founder of Authors United, a writers group critical of Amazon, has joined with the Authors Guild and the New America Foundation to host “Amazon’s Book Monopoly: A Threat to Freedom of

Expression?,” a discussion to be held at the New America Foundation’s office in Washington, D.C., on January 27. Among the speakers on the program are authors Scott Turow and Susan Cheever, Smashwords founder Mark Coker, and agent Eric Simonoff.

Apple Submits Appeal Brief

In a brief, Apple continued its efforts to get the Supreme Court to overturn the verdict that the company engaged in e-book price-fixing. Apple contends the judge in the case erred in finding its actions liable under the “per se” rule, and that its role should be viewed under the “rule of reason” framework, which it believes would exonerate the company. Government lawyers contend Apple’s version of its role in the conspiracy has been “sanitized.”
