Facing a weak economy and a drop in sales of over 20%, the University of New Mexico Press last week decided to layoff two employees at the end of April, and is looking into outsourcing its warehouse/customer service operations. UNM Press director Luther Wilson acknowledged that the press, like many other university presses, is facing difficult times but said that, outside of the fate of warehouse/customer service operations, he doesn't foresee any more layoffs on the horizon. If UNM sheds it's warehouse staff, nine jobs will be lost bringing the press from about 27 employees to approximately 15.

In addition to its own publishing program, UNM Press currently handles fulfillment operations for a number of small presses.
