Harvest House Brings Chinese American History to Life

Kyle Hatfield, acquisitions editor at Harvest House, took world rights from Jevon Bolden of Embolden Media Group to Mamie Tape: A Chinese American Girl’s Fight to Go to School by Marie Chan, a Chinese American author and former elementary school teacher. The picture book reveals for young readers the story of Mamie Tape, an 8-year-old girl who in 1884 was excluded from a San Francisco school because she was Chinese. She and her family fought for equality and eventually won a landmark case affirming her right to public education as a U.S. citizen. The book, for ages 6-9, will be published via Harvest House’s Ten Peaks Press imprint in winter 2024.

A Look at ‘The Many Faces of Jesus’

Kyle Rohane, acquisitions editor at Zondervan Reflective, bought world rights from Keely Boeving of WordServe Literary to Grace Hamman’s The Many Faces of Jesus. Hamman, a writer, podcaster, and scholar specializing in medieval literature and theology, will explore representations of Jesus in medieval art and literature in an effort to help readers better imagine and understand Jesus’s character. The book is slated for publication in fall 2023.

Baker Starts ‘Leading Well’

Patnacia Goodman, acquisitions editor at Baker Books, bought world rights from Jevon Bolden of Embolden Media Group to Leading Well by author, consultant, and leadership coach Jeanne Porter-King, Ph. D. The leadership guide provides “barrier-breaking wellness strategies and interactive application tools for Black women based on Jesus’s encounter with the Samaritan woman,” according to the publisher. Publication is scheduled for summer 2023.

Kar-Ben Takes on a Monster

Publisher Joni Sussman at Kar-Ben Publishing bought world rights from Liza Voges at Eden Street Literary to Sophie’s Monster Goes to Shul by Sandy Asher. In the picture book, Sophie gains her independence from an imaginary monster that follows her everywhere. Publication is scheduled for fall 2023. Robbin Brosterman at the Bright Agency represented the illustrator, Maria Mola.

Paraclete Celebrates Jesus’s Birthday

Paraclete Press took world rights from Charlotte Wenger at Prospect Agency to Happy Birthday, Christmas Child by Laura Sassi. The counting board book, illustrated by Gabi Murphy, features a lilting rhyme that culminates with a celebration of Jesus's birth. Publication is scheduled for fall 2022. Murphy did not use an agent.
