New titles from popular authors landed in the top spots in Germany, Italy, and France in August. Charlotte Roche created a media fury in Germany (and garnered some American headlines as well) with her first book, Wetlands. The celebrity author's second, partly autobiographical novel that includes an examination of the marital sex life of the protagonist, is already a huge hit in Germany with over 500,000 copies in print of Spread..., Pray, Screw. Grove published Wetlands in the U.S. and has made an offer for the new title, but nothing has been signed.

In France it was Amélie Nothomb's 20th novel that debuted at #1, Kill the Father. An award winner as well as a bestseller, Nothomb has been published in the U.S. by Europa Editions, which released Hygiene and the Assassin last November.

Another French novelist had the top-selling title in Italy last month as The Furious Army by Fred Vargas landed at #1. Furious Army is part of Vargas's Commissioner Adamsberg series, which is published in the U.S. by Penguin. Uncertain Place will be released by Penguin in November.

Other authors with new titles landing in high spots abroad include Jonathan Franzen, whose Freedom debuted at #3 in France, while P.C. and Kristin Cast's Burned hit the German charts in the second spot. Irish author Melissa Hill was #4 on the Italian combined list in August. While Something from Tiffany's is set in New York, the romance writer has yet to break through in America.
