Three years ago, MUTTS comic strip creator Patrick McDonnell became interested in the work of Power of Now author Eckhart Tolle, and modeled one of his Sunday color comics on the cover of Tolle’s book Stillness Speaks. The comics artist decided to approach Tolle about working on a project together, and in October, Tolle’s publisher, New World Library, will release Guardians of Being, coauthored by Tolle and McDonnell. In the book, MUTTS characters will illustrate Tolle’s lessons about living in the present moment.

MUTTS is syndicated in more than 700 newspapers, and McDonnell has released more than 20 MUTTS books, most recently from Andrews McMeel. New World Library publicity director Monique Muhlenkamp said the house “loved the fact that… two unrelated authors [were] brought together by mutual admiration and love of animals. What we ended up with is a project that we just plain fell in love with and can’t wait to share with booksellers.” The $18 hardcover will go on sale October 5. The house is planning a 150,000-copy first printing on 100% post-consumer waste recycled paper.

McDonnell will sign Guardians of Being blads at New World Library’s booth at BEA (4405) from 2:30-3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 29.
