Despite the odds—the growth of e-books, rising rent, and online discounting—bookstores continue to open and succeed. Speaking at the American Booksellers Association Forum in Medford, Mass., last month, ABA CEO Oren Teicher affirmed that membership in the organization has “stabilized,” and the number of bookstores is up slightly. PW contacted new bookseller/owners who have joined ABA over the past 18 months. Many are filling a void created by the collapse of Borders. Rebecca Glenn and Pete Ledesma, owners of the Book Frog, both worked for Borders stores. Some like Jennifer Cook, owner of Little Joe’s Books, are dipping their toes into the business for the first time and others have previously owned bookstores. A key for all, though, seems to be to think small, 400 to 2,700 sq. ft.

Paper stores were originally news agents selling newspapers, magazines, and cigars. But no more, at least for the Paper Store, headquartered in Acton, Mass. Ever since Bob Anderson, fresh out of college, purchased the original 700 sq. ft. Paper Store in Maynard, Mass., in 1964, he has tinkered with size, format, and product mix to turn it into one of the largest regional chains—and one of the fastest growing retailers—in New England. The company now has more than 1,000 employees and continues to hire as it expands.

According to the newest figures from Bowker Market Research, online retailers accounted for 39% of all book sales in 2011, up from 30% in 2010. The increase gave the online channel, led by Amazon and BN.com, a commanding lead over bookstore chains as the largest outlet for sales. The chains, weakened by the loss of Borders in the year, accounted for only 26% of sales, down from 29% in 2010. Data from Bowker, and other sources, suggest that the gains posted by the e-tailers are being driven mostly by e-book sales. Furthermore, the online channel, much like its bricks-and-mortar competitors, is seeing, if not a decline in print book sales, at least slowing growth.

Nothing has challenged bricks-and-mortar bookstores to reconsider their physical space and what they carry more than the recession and the rise of e-books. Recently, two independents announced that they will reduce their space. Third Street Books in McMinnville, Ore., which expanded in 2006, is in the process of contracting and subletting a portion of its store, while Bunch of Grapes in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., is moving across the street to a 3,300-sq.-ft. location.

The trade paperback format lost some ground to e-books through the first nine months of 2011, according to Bowker Market Research, but it remained the most popular print category. Still, the question being asked is what consumer segment the trade paperback is serving in a time when e-books often capture readers looking for the things paperbacks used to offer: a lower price point and a light-weight alternative to hardcovers. Although publishers remain committed to the format, many agents say the biggest shift, and the most damning, has been the demise of Borders. A number of agents PW spoke to said that with Borders gone—all agreed that one of the things Borders did best was sell literary fiction in trade paperback—the barriers to bringing a title out in trade paperback are higher than ever.

When World Book Night organizers expanded the book-giving event from the U.K. to the U.S. for 2012 they knew that generating buzz—and understanding—about a program with the goal of giving away 500,000 copies of 30 titles on a single day would be a challenge, given the limited budget available. So when the newly appointed WBN US executive director Carl Lennertz was approached by Andrea Chambers, director of NYU’s Center for Publishing, and offered the help of NYU’s masters in publishing students to publicize the event, it was a no-brainer. “I wept in gratitude,” Lennertz quipped.

Like the Austin Independent Business Alliance, begun by Steve Bercu, co-owner of BookPeople, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, many early shop-local initiatives were started to keep Borders out. In Austin, Borders’s attempt to move across the street from Bercu’s store also led him to enlist Dan Houston and his strategic planning consultancy Civic Economics for their now classic study, in 2002, of BookPeople, Waterloo Records, and Borders, which showed for the first time the economic impact of the chains: for every $100 a customer spends, the local economy gets $13 back from a chain store, compared to $45, from a local merchant. Although Borders is gone, Barnes & Noble continues to hold on to a large slice of the bookselling pie. With Amazon poised to reach Wal-Mart proportions by the end of this decade, according to Stacy Mitchell, senior researcher with the New Rules Project of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance, and the e-book onslaught, can shopping local turn the tide?

The addition of 41 former Borders stores helped to give Books-A-Million its best holiday season in years for the quarter ended January 28, 2012, but how well that strategy will play out for the full year isn’t yet clear. While fourth quarter sales rose 10.7%, to just under $167 million, comparable store sales fell 5.7%. Earnings in the period rose to $7.5 million from $6.8 million. Executive chairman Clyde Anderson (who turned over the reins of CEO to Terry Finley last week) said in a conference call that despite the absence of Borders, customer traffic did not show a meaningful increase in the quarter. He noted that BAM and Borders stores had competed directly in only 15 locations. Asked about BAM’s future store plans, Finley told PW, “We will continue to be opportunistic in our real estate strategy, looking for underserved markets and attractive deals.”

It’s not just trade bookstores that are feeling the pinch from online retailers and other discounters. At the National Association of College Stores’ Campus Market Expo held earlier this month at the Salt Lake Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, NACS’s OnCampus Research division reported that approximately 67% of students comparison shop for textbooks, and close to half, or 43%, bypass their school stores entirely. Even when they do browse, that isn’t always with the intention of buying a book. One bookseller at a prep school in Florida found students using cell phones to photograph assigned reading. Many of NACS’s initiatives and educational sessions at CAMEX addressed shrinking margins and encouraged booksellers to create relationships with students to bring them into their stores.

A last-minute addition to the University Press of New England list has become the fastest-selling book in the Hanover, N.H., university press consortium’s 42-year history and its first book to hit Amazon’s top 10. World War II Remembered isn’t even published by one of its regular distribution clients. Instead, UPNE took on the self-published book five days before Christmas to help its neighbors at the Kendal at Hanover retirement community. They had already sold through their thousand-copy first printing when they learned that Brian Williams was interested in airing a segment on NBC.

When Fraser Ross opened his first trendy Kitson clothing and accessories store in West Hollywood in 2001, it was a magnet for celebrities and the paparazzi that stalked them, a most unlikely retail candidate to capture the attention of New York publishers. But one decade and an additional 12 stores later, Kitson has emerged as a valuable specialty outlet for publishers, with book sales topping $1.6 million last year. “Our turn on books is 11 times a year,” says Ross, who moved to Los Angeles from Toronto after establishing himself there as a retailer by running Ice, his first specialty store. “Kitson carries about 400 titles, which might not seem like a lot, but when a book is hot we easily sell 1,000 to 1,500 copies of it. It’s a huge add-on business. Clothing has become risky, but our book sales keep growing. The books at Kitson provide entertainment shopping for the whole family,” Ross says. And sales keep growing; this January the chain sold $100,000 in books, five times more than last January.
