Reporting to the President and CEO/Founder, the Director of Publicity Operations (DPO) is a member of Smith Publicity’s executive team and a key component in the continued growth of one of the nation’s leading book marketing agencies.

The DPO’s primary focus is to counsel, guide and manage the Smith Publicity team of publicists and oversee and coordinate comprehensive media outreach campaigns. Smith Publicity clients are primarily authors, but also include publishers, speakers, experts and companies.

DPO interacts with clients on high-level strategic direction, evaluates progress of campaigns, and leads customer service/strategy initiatives as campaigns evolve. The DPO is also charged with new service development and enhancement.

Qualities/ Requirements:

• Minimum 7-10 years book publicity experience with either agency or publisher.
• Experience in publishing industry. Book distribution, book sales, direct marketing and self-publishing experience a plus
• MBA preferred, BA/BS required
• Superior writing and verbal communication skills; extensive press release writing experience
• Forward thinking, strong familiarity with traditional and new media
• Thorough knowledge of the publishing industry including trends, developments, changes, etc.
• Ability to handle multiple projects and quickly understand a wide variety of book subject areas
• Proven ability to develop, pitch, and place stories with media outlets, understand sophisticated marketing campaigns
• Experience with social media and blogger outreach
• Experience developing, planning, motivating and supervising publicists
• Must be a “News Junkie” who keeps track of news stories, trends, developments, and media outlets
• Knowledge of media databases such as Vocus/Cision
• Comfortable working in a high-performing yet casual office environment
• Initiative, enthusiasm, propensity for original thought and a sense of humor

Salary
• 67K with bonus.
