Senior Acquisitions Editors are responsible for the management and development of publishing programs within specific disciplines; work closely with senior management to expand business through an aggressive growth strategy. The Senior Acquisitions Editor must be a strategic thinker; possess a commercial product development mentality; bring a strong sense of leadership, enthusiasm, commitment to excellence and a willingness to try new approaches to the business of publishing. An entrepreneurial professional will be required to fulfill this role. This position will work very closely with the Publisher to develop new markets as well as to grow existing product lines in the both the biological and physical sciences.

Typical Responsibilities:

• Strategic Vision, Direction and Leadership – Creating new lists as well as building upon existing business and future acquisition, anticipate and establish the vision and lead the development of products that address the needs/interest of academic and professional educators.
• Aggressive signing of new content (books, online courseware, digital assets).
• Financial results- Ensure appropriate product and volume to bring about profitable results in an ongoing manner.
• External relationships – Select, develop and maintain strategic external relationships with key authors, associations, academic institutions, and market place elements (such as hospitals, corporations, bookstores, etc). Serve as the most senior company representative to the field and lead the acquisition of new business at the forefront of product development, marketing and sales.
• Analyze market trends to formulate market-oriented and customer-focused product development plans.
• Internal relationships – Establish supportive working relationships with other functional areas (production, marketing, sales, finance) and cross-over list managers. Engage the expertise available in other areas, and similarly serve as a resource to other areas to always drive business forward.

Qualifications required:

• Requires 4 year college degree.
• Minimum of 3-5 years experience in college textbook publishing, with a minimum of 3 years of Acquisitions Editor experience in a science related discipline.
• Experienced with marketing and sales processes of college textbooks.
• Skilled in identification, negotiation of contracts and management of Authors.
