Duties:

• Research and develop publishing leads
o Dialogue with agents, authors, licensors, photographers, and other talent
o Evaluate and respond to submissions
o Participate in editorial board meetings

• Acquire new titles
o Conceptualize potential projects
o Devise preliminary budgets for projects and make financial assessments
o Negotiate publishing agreements
o Assist the Publisher with key titles and relationships through the Acquisitions process

• Sponsor projects
o Champion titles through the development and production process
o Continue to manage the creative dialogue with agents, authors, licensors, and other creative stakeholders (as appropriate) as a project moves into production
o Work as a project editor and developmental editor on sponsored projects
o Oversee freelance project editors, writers, photo researchers, copyeditors, and other contributors
o Enforce production schedules

• Coordinate marketing of sponsored titles with the Sales & Marketing departments
o Develop initial marketing leads
o Strategize with marketing and special sales to create sales opportunities
o Write catalog and title information listing copy

Requirements:

• At least seven years of editorial experience in the book publishing industry
• Ability to multi task and work on several projects at once in addition to supervising others
• A strong understanding of the business side of book publishing
• Versatility in photo editing and visual language experience
• The ability to map out a project from start to finish
• A college degree in a humanities field
• Familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Adobe Creative Suite skills required.
• Interest in environmental, Eastern wisdom a plus.
• Good working knowledge of popular culture
• Children’s publishing required.
