Description
Albert Whitman & Company is seeking an experienced children’s book acquisitions Editor. The Editor will have responsibility for content acquisition, list development, author and project management, developmental editing, and some copyediting. The Editor must have strong attention to detail skills, knowledge of the children’s book marketplace, and the ability to work independently as well as within a group environment.

Responsibilities
Manage projects from acquisitions through the bookmaking process, including but not limited to:
•Acquire content and manage author/agent relationships
•Develop and edit manuscripts for children’s books ranging in age levels from board book to young adult
•Manage editorial process to ensure deadlines, budget, and quality expectations are met
•Seek opportunities to improve and expand processes and department goals
•Negotiate publishing deals with authors and agents
•Research competitive titles and determine project positioning
•Work closely with other departments to maximize profitability
•Administrative duties including copyright application and manuscript styling

Requirements
•Bachelor's degree or higher in English, literature, or journalism
•Minimum 5 years editing experience in children’s books
•Experience in copyediting and strong knowledge of the Chicago Manual of Style
•Excellent attention to detail, quality, process, and organization
•Ability to identify potential problems and resolve them before they become actual problems
•Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
•Exceptional oral and written communication skills
•Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel; Knowledge of InDesign a plus
•Capable of learning new processes and technologies quickly
•Able to travel to work-related events and meetings (2 or 3 times a year)
