Description | Getty Publications publishes and distributes books and digital publications resulting from the programs and activities of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Getty Research Institute, and the Getty Foundation. These four programs are part of the J. Paul Getty Trust, a private operating foundation dedicated to the visual arts. Through its museum and work in conservation, research, and grant making the Getty provides opportunities for people to more fully understand, experience, value, and preserve the world’s artistic and cultural heritage. Getty Publications’ mission is the creation, production and dissemination of publications of significant quality and distinction that represent the range and diversity of the Getty’s activities and aspirations, forwarding the Getty’s individual program and collective priorities. The Getty publishes 35 to 40 books per year in two seasons, including an increasing number of digital publications. The Sales and Marketing Manager reports to the Publisher and oversees all sales, marketing and publicity activity for Getty Publications and is charged with raising the market and media profile of titles and increasing their sales. The Sales and Marketing Manager directs a staff of two people. Requirements: Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree and at least five years experience working in a sales and marketing capacity for a trade or university press, including experience in electronic marketing, publicity, social media, and the distribution and sale of electronic publications. Knowledge of the market for illustrated books and an understanding of best practices and current trends in sales and marketing are required. Candidates must be creative, organized, collaborative, and diplomatic. Responsibilities: Manage the relationship with Getty Publications’ trade distributors for print titles (Chicago Distribution Center in North America and Roundhouse Book Services in the UK and Europe) to ensure that sales for Getty Publications are optimized. Oversee the dissemination of title information, metadata, and sales materials. Present titles at biannual sales conferences and work in collaboration with sales representatives so they are informed and enthusiastic about Getty Publications. In collaboration with Getty Publications’ General Manager, monitor and manage inventory. In collaboration with the Publisher and General Manager of Getty Publications, establish distribution channels for electronic books and manage these accounts. Provide sales estimates, pricing, and format guidance for each title being considered for publication. Conduct market research on comparable titles, sales histories and performance of similar titles, and other trends and influences and solicit feedback and sales projections from the Getty store and trade distributors. Supervise two staff members (Marketing Coordinator/Publicity and Marketing Coordinator/Direct Sales). Meet with each of them regularly and provide clear goals and short- and long-term strategic direction for their work. Oversee the publicity and advertising efforts of Getty Publications. Work in close collaboration with the Marketing Coordinator/Publicity to create a detailed publicity and advertising plan (in both print and electronic media) for each title on the list and to ensure that it is executed properly. Review and edit (as required) all press and publicity materials, including those intended for social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, etc.). Oversee print and electronic direct marketing efforts. Work in close collaboration with the Marketing Coordinator/Direct Sales to create a detailed marketing plan for each title on the list and to ensure that it is executed properly. Oversee the Getty Publications web site and monthly e-newsletter Work in tandem with Getty Trust Communications to plan and synchronize publicity and advertising efforts relating to Getty Publications. Interact with authors to strategize sales, marketing, and publicity opportunities and to plan and execute promotional and publicity events. Develop new accounts and new sales outlets. Manage the departmental budget, working in close coordination with the General Manager, Getty Publications. Represent Getty Publications at trade shows and academic conferences. Sell titles directly to Amazon and other house accounts. Additional duties as assigned. |
