Description
The University of Missouri invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the University of Missouri Press. Following its transfer from the four-campus University System to the University of Missouri-Columbia campus, the Press is poised for growth and is seeking a dynamic, innovative leader prepared to oversee the evolution of the Press as it takes advantage of recent and future developments in scholarly communication and publishing technology.
Founded in 1958, the University of Missouri Press has been a member of the Association of American University Presses since 1960. During the last half century, it has published more than 1,800 books, of which approximately 1,100 remain in print. The Press has a long-standing commitment to publishing scholarly works on American history and literature, journalism, political science, cultural studies, African American studies, and women’s studies, as well as creative nonfiction. Examples of its major publishing initiatives include the Mark Twain and His Circle Series, the American Military Experience Series, the Sports and American Culture Series, the Shades of Blue and Gray Series, and the Collected Works of Langston Hughes. Its list also offers regional trade books on the history, culture, government, natural resources, and geographical features of Missouri and the surrounding states. In recent years, the Press has made nearly all of its new titles available on a variety of digital platforms, including formats for handheld readers, and it is currently engaged in a program to create ebooks for many of its backlist titles.
The Director reports to the Provost and is responsible for establishing the strategic vision for all Press functions. He or she manages the publishing endeavor in all of its aspects, including editorial direction, business planning, budgetary oversight, fundraising, technology applications, book production, distribution, sales, and marketing. The Director actively represents and promotes the interests of the Press throughout the university, the academy more broadly, the regional cultural community, and the publishing industry. Working closely with faculty members, advisory committees, and key academic units, the Director facilitates cooperative ventures and programs that promote the University’s research and teaching missions. The Director will establish and oversee internship programs with additional classroom duties as required. The Director is also expected to foster and enhance financial support from foundations and other sources.
The successful candidate for this position will have a thorough understanding of the diverse challenges facing scholarly communications today—challenges that involve not only academic publishers but also libraries, universities, scholars, and booksellers. The University of Missouri-Columbia is seeking a Director who is capable of effectively guiding the Press to success within a rapidly changing industry, one that requires exploration of new avenues of publication while maintaining sound business practices and the scholarly rigor inherent in the best of academic publishing.
Qualifications: A graduate degree in a discipline related to the Press’s areas of publishing emphasis or to one of its operational departments, such as marketing or business, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired; ten years of increasingly responsible management positions in trade/academic publishing; a proven track record in applying sound judgment and business practice to achieve a sustainable publishing program; strength in managing staff in diverse functions to produce a cohesive publishing effort; evidence of innovative thinking in resolving publishing challenges. Proven fundraising experience will also be an asset.
Applications should include a curriculum vitae or résumé, a cover letter that describes relevant experience and reasons for interest in the position, and the names and contact information for five references.
All applications must be made online at http://hrs.missourui.edu. Complete instructions for the application process can be found at http://hrs.missouri.edu/find-a-job/staff/application-process.php
