UMI, a large, independent, African American-owned and operated Christian media company is looking for full-time, part-time, and contract editorial and writing talent to join our team! These roles will touch one or more of our organization’s branded publications. Aside from meeting all deadlines, responsibilities may include overseeing product development from conception through finished product, managing the support group (writers, graphic designers) assigned to the publication(s), and completing all necessary paperwork relating to the development of the publication(s).
Key Roles / Responsibilities
•Create lessons and activities using overviews for quarterly publications.
•Develop, compile, research, write as needed, and copyedit a product, as well as its related workbook, teaching-success-kits, and other products as needed.
•Edit lessons and activities checking against style manual for accuracy; writing or rewriting material when necessary to spare time or costs.
•Provide art instructions and photo needs for Graphic Designer and communicate regularly to assure publication’s visuals are created as specified.
•Meet all published production deadlines.
•Must have an excellent command of the English Language, including: grammatical skills, vocabulary, punctuation, sentence structure, writing, researching, and organizing ideas.
•Must have in-depth knowledge of Biblical content, including how to use Bible Commentaries, Dictionaries, and other resources.
•A minimum of a bachelor’s degree is required from a relevant field (writing, communications, theology, et al).
•Some years of training either from seminary, church-affiliated school, etc is preferred.
•Must have writing experience—which may be proven through course/school papers, published works, etc.
•Must be able to pay attention to details, dependable, edit/copyedit, use critical thinking skills, show initiative, able to prioritize, and manage a fluctuating workload.
•Must have experience in copyediting/proofreading, and have an excellent command of Editors’ and Proofreaders’ Marks and a critical eye for correct grammar, sentence structures, paragraph formation, punctuation, etc.
•Must be able to prioritize and multitask.
•Is a self starter; able to function with minimal supervision.
•Possesses ability to express clearly and concisely the necessary art directions that will enable and enhance an assigned graphic designer’s creativity.
•Able to manage workflow of editors and production manager.
•Possesses knowledge of characteristics and trends of publication’s age-groups.
•Experience in managing relationships with writers and graphic designers.
•Must have relevant experience with a specific age group, such as teens/preschoolers/primaries/young teens/young adults
•Demonstrated work experience with digital/web media content is a plus.
