The Events Director will:
• Work with the executive team to develop a programming vision and operational plan for enhancing the events program
• Promote Kepler’s Arts & Lectures to authors, speakers, publishers, and publicists
• Conceive, propose, book, and produce events including lectures, panel discussions, on-stage interviews, and educational workshops
• Promote events creatively using a combination of mainstream media, social media, and targeted community outreach
• Work closely with authors, speakers, publishers, publicists, and community organizations to identify speakers, panel participants, and interviewers
• Host events, including introducing speakers, and train and supervise other staff members and community volunteers to host events
• Facilitate interactive discussions between authors and audience participants
• Make each event a unique and memorable experience for the speakers and audience members
• Set goals and track results for the events program
• Collaborate with fundraising/development personnel to create special opportunities for donors to engage with Kepler’s Arts & Lectures

Experience and Skills required

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:
• Solid track record of producing a broad range of literary and cultural events
• Extensive relationships in the literary community with authors, speakers, publishers, and publicists
• Knowledge of current affairs and major trends in the publishing and literary worlds
• High degree of creativity
• Detail oriented and highly organized
• Good public speaking skills
• Demonstrated experience in working well in team environments
• Media savvy with a range of traditional and new media
• Ease with a wide variety of people and situations from high-powered donors to high-profile speakers, senior publishing industry executives, and general customers

Kepler’s Arts & Lectures is a new non-profit public forum that offers lectures, panel discussions, on-stage interviews, and educational workshops covering the arts, culture, technology and current affairs to foster intellectual discourse and civic engagement. Kepler’s Arts & Lectures is committed to hosting noteworthy writers and thinkers so people can interact with these leading minds in a face-to-face setting.

Kepler’s Arts & Lectures was started in Fall 2012 as part of a reorganization of Kepler’s Books, the legendary literary institution and bookstore based in Menlo Park, CA. Kepler's already had an award-winning events program, having hosted over 200 literary and cultural events annually. Recent notable speakers have included Sonia Sotomayor, Salman Rushdie, TC Boyle, Michael Chabon, John Green, Louise Penny, Tony LaRussa, Rick Riordan, Lemony Snicket and Lauren Oliver. With Kepler’s Arts & Lectures we now are expanding this program in a major way to address cultural and educational needs in the region.
