The Opportunity:

This position will provide an opportunity for an energetic Senior Editor to join a team of smart, creative and supportive professionals. She/he will work in non-fiction, a genre that’s experiencing explosive growth. Additionally, she/he will join a division that sells great fun books to all channels of distribution, including the school market channels.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Manage all aspects of the Non-fiction editorial process for approximately 20 books per season (50-60 books per year) for the Trade and School Channels. Liaison with Non-fiction Global Publisher.

Specific Responsibilities:

The primary focus of this position will be to proactively and reactively develop non-fiction titles with the school channels, understanding their growing needs and fulfilling those needs accurately, and efficiently. There is a growing need in the Trade and school markets for non-fiction titles based on Common Core.

In addition the Senior Editor will work with agents to acquire narrative non-fiction for the middle grade and young adult audience. Editor will then work with authors, illustrators, foreign publishers, or packagers on text and art; editing manuscripts, proofreading galley proofs; reviewing sketches; and reviewing final art, mechanicals, and other stages of production; managing approval processes when applicable; and writing cover copy, fact sheets, catalog copy and presentation scripts.

Range of Editorial Publishing tasks, including but not limited to the following:

-Work closely with Publisher & school market channels on special projects, executing a wide range of ideas
-Generate proposals in preparation for acquisitions and soliciting the School Market
-Manage School Market original publishing - track all projects, assign editors, work with design & freelancers
-Run P&L's for potential acquisitions
-Work closely with production on scheduling

Required Competencies:

Must be organized, energetic, and passionate about non-fiction books for children and young adults. Must be able to prioritize and juggle a variety of projects. Must have great communication skills, be a team player, attend to details, and keep to schedules. Must be creative and have an understanding of the competition and the marketplace.

Specific Experience:

Approx. 5+ years of editorial experience, managing a list and working for a trade publisher. Prior experience acquiring titles and working with agents and authors is required. Non-fiction editorial experience and experience working with packagers is a plus.

Specific Skills:

Writing, editing, presenting and proofreading, computer skills.
