General Purpose of Job:
The Director, Product Marketing guides the team responsible for promotion of print and digital books/products produced by the American Bar Association in order to achieve sales revenue goals. The position establishes and implements best practices across our promotional channels. Additionally, the Director coordinates and reports departmental efforts with other ABA departments, including our editorial group, and our volunteer publishing committee.

The Director will guide the team of six managers and one assistant that provide day-to-day planning and execution of marketing activities. The Director will review and shape the team’s work products, plans, new book business cases, reports (including sales, margin, inventory, and campaign response) and other activities. The Director will also plan and lead storewide promotions held approximately three times each year.

The Director will bring an innovative approach to work efforts and champion new initiatives that introduce best practices to the team, especially in our email, web, social, direct mail and print channels. The Director will implement standards that increase sales performance or reduce effort/expense in areas of such as internal processes, design, infrastructure, reporting, and communications. The Director will identify new channels and opportunities to further expand customer awareness of the ABA print and digital products.

The Director acts as the marketing contact for our volunteer publishing board and leads coordination with other ABA departments. The Director will work with the volunteer publishing board to communicate accomplishments and align on large marketing strategies. The Director is also the lead contact with other ABA departments, especially Digital Marketing, Marketing Analytics, Information Systems, and Editorial. In this capacity the Director establishes priorities, timelines and expected outcomes.

The ABA publishes about 180 new titles each year and maintains a backlist of hundreds of additional titles. Almost all our titles are available at shopaba.org and many are available through Amazon.com. We are increasingly offering new titles in eBook format as well as print.

The ideal candidate will have at least the following experience and skills:
Bachelor’s Degree from four-year college or university; 10+ years of marketing experience with accountability for over $5MM in annual revenue. Experience promoting a tangible product (books, consumer goods, etc) in both B2B and B2C, legal knowledge a plus. Experience managing a team of 3+ direct reports, plus indirect reports. Experience reengineering processes and implementing standards. Knowledge of email and web metrics and ability to interpret reports and take actions. Experience with print and direct mail promotions. Basic knowledge of ecommerce website methods and best practices.
