Description
The digital production designer will design and execute digital content formats (including developing user interfaces) for illustrated book publisher. The incumbent is responsible for the uniqueness and creativity necessary for successful digital products, including ebooks, apps, games, and others. This person is also accountable to ensure that all electronic projects are utilizing the most streamlined workflows and most current digital technologies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Design and creation of digital books and other digital content packages (apps, games, downloadables, etc.).
• Where appropriate direct freelancers and other out-of-house staff in design and creation of digital books and content.
• Maintain excellent understanding of current ebook and digital technologies, with ability to apply them to illustrated book content.
• Work with art directors, editors, and designers to establish and create layouts and features for digital products that best showcase content on a range of devices and platforms, including strategizing different formats for different platforms.
• Work with art director and publishing operations manager to streamline workflows for digital-first production.
• Oversee all electronic projects for book division, and advise VP, executive producer on digital development opportunities.

SKILL REQUIREMENTS

• Strong digital background and at least three years experience designing and producing websites, ebooks, and other digital products for illustrated content.
• Strong technical and design skills, including current page layout and design software on Mac OS (QuarkXPress and Adobe Creative Suite), current web design software (Dreamweaver), and ability to produce complex, technical products.
• Expertise in current ebook standards (XML, HTML, CSS, EPUB 3), and special formats offered by various reading environments (e.g., iBooks Author, Kindle Panel View, Nook Comics, etc.), and ability to produce high-quality content for these platforms.
• Portfolio of creative, functional, and pleasing designs for digital content.
• Ability to work in fast-paced environment and to insure products meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• At least three years experience designing and producing websites, ebooks, and other digital products for illustrated content.
• Current page layout and web design software proficiency on Mac OS.
• Expertise in current ebook standards (XML, HTML, CSS, EPUB 3), and special formats offered by various reading environments (e.g., iBooks Author, Kindle Panel View, Nook Comics, etc.)
• Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality content for these platforms.
• Portfolio of creative, functional, and pleasing designs for digital content.
• Ability to work successfully in fast-paced environment and to meet tight deadlines.
• Excellent communication, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work independently and with other members of the team to successful conclusions.
• Must be composed under pressure and possess healthy self-motivation to accomplish tasks over all obstacles.
