Prometheus Books is seeking a senior acquisitions editor to acquire titles for its nonfiction list in all categories. Strength in popular science is preferred.

An independent publisher of provocative and progressive nonfiction, Prometheus Books publishes an average of 110 new nonfiction and genre fiction titles each year under four imprints.

The ideal candidate will be passionate and self-motivated, with effective communication skills; commercial acumen; a solid understanding of the marketplace, the competition, and the reader; and the ability to be a strong team player while working independently. Previous acquisitions, editorial, or related publishing experience required. This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities include:
• Acquiring new nonfiction titles for the intelligent lay reader.
• Seeking out new authors and book ideas: actively researching ideas, topics, and people to contact for potential books.
• Preparing proposals for acquisitions-committee review.
• Evaluating manuscripts in terms of appropriateness, quality, audience, marketability, and ROI.
• Negotiating and finalizing contracts, working with our editor in chief and president.
• Developing relationships and a network of contacts with literary agents, authors, and editorial colleagues.
• Planning and identifying relevant trends and market demographics to expand our publication program.
• Supervising editorial preparation of manuscripts.
• Guiding authors through the editorial process.
• Working with Marketing, Sales, and Publicity departments to properly position titles and devise promotion strategies.
• Communicating with editorial, production, marketing, and sales staff to ensure timely and profitable publications.
