Overview:
Getty Publications produces award-winning, highly illustrated books that result from or complement the work of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute, and the Getty Research Institute. This wide variety of titles covers the fields of art, photography, archaeology, architecture, conservation, and the humanities for both the general public and specialists. The majority of our publications are printed but we are producing an increasing number of digital publications. The Digital Publications Manager will work in close concert with the Getty Publications management team to develop, implement, and manage the press’s digital publishing program. The position is responsible for managing a variety of digital publications, including PDFs, ebooks, apps, a journal, and other online publications.

Responsibilities:
Manage cross-functional teams that include editorial, production, design, and marketing staff to develop digital publication projects from inception to distribution. Work with content-providers and Getty Publications colleagues to conceive projects and to establish development and production needs and parameters. Identify vendors and consultants, including programmers, UX designers and software developers, to join project teams and manage their work. Manage the digital publication development process and oversee project budgets. Handle pre-production, publication, and post-publication support and maintenance of digital publications, including quality control and trouble shooting.

Manage the digitization of out-of-print backlist books and the creation and ongoing maintenance of an online virtual library to house them.

Serve as liaison with Getty Trust IT, Web, and Collections Information and Access departments. Work with staff in these areas to facilitate efficient and effective cross-departmental collaboration.

Work closely with departmental colleagues to develop new processes that successfully integrate digital and print publication workflows.

Work with Marketing and Sales staff to ensure that the press has robust metadata standards and thorough implementation procedures.

Work with Publisher and Marketing/Sales Manager to establish distribution channels (consumer/trade, academic, library) for digital publications. Manage these relationships and their contracts.

Work with Rights Manager to confirm rights status of backlist titles slated for digitization and to coordinate the clearance of rights required for the digitization of select backlist titles and forthcoming digital projects.

Research new trends in digital publishing and make recommendations for new projects, products, markets, and appropriate solutions to digital processes and workflows.

Supervise digital publishing staff and interns.

Experience:

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years of directly related experience in trade or academic publishing, ideally in the area of illustrated books. Demonstrated competence as a project manager who can set priorities and deliver projects on time and budget. Demonstrated competence in digital publishing processes and knowledge of current standards and trends in digital technologies and digital publishing. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and to work both independently and as part of a team. Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Qualifications:

3 to 6 years of supervisory and/or project/process management experience
