|The Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture seeks a Managing Editor for The Hedgehog Review. Published three times annually, The Hedgehog Review is an interdisciplinary journal of analysis and critical reflections on contemporary culture and cultural change. THR is looking for a Managing Editor with the energy and experience to manage the production of the journal in both print and digital formats, grow its subscriber base, and expand its reach beyond academic circles.|
The Managing Editor's primary responsibilities will be to guide the day-to-day production of THR. The ideal applicant will have the flexibility and efficiency to wear several hats at once. The Managing Editor will conduct some background research for the thematic sections, correspond with authors, obtain permissions, copy-edit articles, oversee art direction and design, and work with the designer and printer. The Managing Editor will also solicit advertising and propose growth possibilities in this area; oversee all correspondence with our print and digital readership; and, crucially, manage the updating and expansion of THR's internet presence.
We seek to expand our digital presence, and in particular to use social media to foster community between THR, its readers, and its contributors. Since the Managing Editor will take the lead on this initiative, he or she must have experience in the professional use of social media, and be creative in their application. The Managing Editor will also work with the Editor on creating and managing an annual budget, and will reconcile the monthly Sales Account. The Managing Editor is in charge of all reporting on the journal to the Editor, and to the leadership of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture. Ideally, applicants will have excellent writing and editing skills, and five or more years' publishing experience with project management, social media, editing, and print and web-based marketing. Some design experience-art direction, publications layout, advertising copy, etc.-is preferred. More generally, the Managing Editor will have strong organization and planning skills, an eye for detail, the ability to work to deadline, and an eagerness to advance the intellectual mission of the journal.
The position has an end date of 8/31/2014 and may be renewed subject to performance and availability of funds.
