Responsibilities

The Senior Publicist works with the Directors in the Corporate Communications and Media Relations Department to strategize and coordinate traditional and social media outreach, integrated communications planning, and special events that will generate ongoing positive publicity for various divisions within Scholastic. The senior publicist will work on publicizing literacy and corporate programs for Scholastic and should have experience working with general media and trade reporters and with social media tools. The ideal candidate has at least 4 years’ experience in publicity, and is a strong writer, communicator, strategist and story-pitcher.

Specific job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

• Brainstorm creative ideas for traditional and digital /viral PR campaigns for products, programs and the brand
• Write press releases and persuasive pitches for media
• Create and maintain targeted media lists
• Find and pitch speaking opportunities and awards for key executives and programs
• Aggressively pitch stories to a wide range of media
• Write for the corporate blogs and coordinate promotions through Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and other social tools with the team
• Identify, follow and build relationships with reporters and bloggers writing about education, parenting and related issues
• Meet with internal “clients” in various divisions of Scholastic to gather information, participate in long-term planning, and make recommendations for creating media opportunities
• Organize an maintain online press kits and other promotional materials
• Set up interviews for company spokesperson and prepare well-crafted talking points
• Plan and manage media events to launch select products and programs

BA or higher and minimum 4 years’ experience in public relations

Specific Skills

• Experience working with consumer-related products and on cause-related campaigns
• Strong communication skills and success pitching media
• Excellent writing ability
• Ability to juggle multiple assignments and prioritize projects
• Ability to work independently and as a member of the team
• Strong interpersonal skills and professional presentation
• Willingness to work long hours when needed

Salary
• Commensurate with experience.
