Job Description:

This is an exciting opportunity to join an established and innovative independent publisher as the Publicity/Marketing Manager. We are looking for a pro-active, self-motivated and talented person, to join our busy team in the U.S. as an integral part of the organization. In this position, you would lead the marketing and publicity campaigns for North America, create and implement effective marketing pitches and content messages directed to diverse audiences, work directly with both authors and customers, as well as liaising closely with our London office. The ideal applicant is a dynamic, enthusiastic, creative PR/marketing professional who is detail oriented, has good media contacts, is driven and has an understanding of the publishing industry and its markets.

The Boston Publicity/Marketing Manager will work with our small staff to secure media and market coverage for our titles, by developing and managing national publicity and marketing campaigns for approximately 10-15 titles per year. This position is responsible for promoting the company’s titles in niche areas, as well as in general markets, in addition to helping to drive sales revenue by utilizing both traditional and new media. We are looking for a well-organized, hands-on, and commercially-driven individual, with a strategic focus on the trade/professional publishing space, both in print and digital form and its markets. You should enjoy working both as a team, as well as independently, and have an eye for detail. You will need to be confident in liaising, building and maintaining relationships with people across all channels, and with those based internationally. With up-to-date IT skills, you will need to have a solid understanding of using modern metadata, bibliographic, content management and other digital workflow systems.

Primary Responsibilities:

•Handle all publicity/promotional/marketing activity, which includes both traditional and digital media.
•Orchestrate marketing plans for each season’s list, bringing fresh and innovative ideas to the table.
• With a strong background in social media, online marketing, email campaigns and some advertising, build community with our readership, so they know who we are, and what we do.
•Create press kits, press releases and manage review copies—regularly communicating any review information via our newsletter.
•Manage the distribution of marketing materials.
•Maintain rich metadata, and utilize our resources and tools (website, catalogs, databases, etc) to their full potential.
•Maintain our website and keep the content current.
•Write smart, strong and inspirational marketing copy for our print and digital content, including catalogs.
•Develop e-marketing/publicity strategies and campaigns.
•Manage marketing/promotion efforts including catalog mailings, author events, marketing materials, trade shows and conferences.
•Work with our sales force to develop catalogs, tip sheets and promotional materials for the sales effort.
•Update Amazon pages and participate in promotion strategy.
•Report publicity/marketing activity in detail, to both Boston and London offices

Qualifications:

•This is a mid-level position—a background in publicity and marketing, working directly with authors and with a genuine interest in business, current affairs and culture is essential.
• Bachelor’s degree required.
•4-7 years experience in the publishing industry, with a successful focus on non-fiction book publishing, is preferred.
•An established network with a range of media/marketing contacts spanning different channels and platforms.
•Strong writing and communication skills both via email and over the phone are essential.
• A self-motivated, proactive project manager with outstanding communication and organizational skills, solid time management, and a strong collaborative sense is essential.
•Experience with metadata feeds, content management, ONIX and Cision preferred.
•Proficient in MS Office; working knowledge of HTML, In-Design, XML, and Photoshop.
