7-Figure Deals For Carol Higgins Clark, McCullough
Judy Quinn -- 11/10/97
She may not be close to approaching her mother Mary's $12-million-a-book deal with S&S and Pocket, but Carol Higgins Clark just signed a new contract that's pretty substantial in its own right: a seven-figure, hard/soft world rights deal for three more Regan Reilly mysteries with Warner, publisher of her three first Reilly mysteries. The new contract, negotiated by Owen Laster of William Morris, constitutes a giant leap from her last contract with Warner in 1992-nearly 10 times more per title. Twanged, Higgins Clark's first book under the new contract, will be published in March 1998.
The Thorn Birds author Colleen McCullough has just signed a seven-figure, three-book, hard/soft world rights deal, which reuinites her with S&S president Carolyn Reidy, who worked with her at Avon. McCullough, represented by Anne Sibbald of Janklow-Nesbit, is expected to write one more novel in her "Roman" novel series (which never sold as well as the blockbuster Thorn Birds) for S&S, as well as two other "family saga" type novels. Neither of the latter two will be the frequently-asked-for Thorn Birds sequel, sources say, and the first S&S book will probably be published around 2000, with no word yet on whether the "Roman" novel will come first. In the meantime, McCullough completes her five-book Morrow contract with next month's release of Caesar.
