In the Kids' Corner
Daisy Maryles, with Diane Roback -- 1/26/98
While a lot of titles make it onto our five (sometimes six) monthly children's bestseller lists, rankings don't tell the whole story. We thought readers might want additional information about some of the hottest sellers. Books about Hanson, the teen idol trio from Oklahoma, are the latest sales phenomenon: three Hanson titles made our nonfiction list, while two others were top contenders; earlier this month, four of those five were on USA Today's top 150 list.
Scholastic's Animorphs series has supplanted Goosebumps in terms of their pattern of sales; every monthly new release title soars to the top of most chain bestseller lists. Another phenomenon: Chicken Soup for Teenage Souls, currently #7 on USA Today's list and #2 on PW's trade paper bestseller list, with 2.5 million copies in print; Health Communications has been shipping about 280,000 copies per month.

Bill Cosby's three Little Bill books are beginning to climb the lists as well, after Oprah chose them for her reading club (Scholastic just went back to press for a million copies combined), though it remains to be seen if Oprah can do for the small set what she can for the grownup books.
