Bart Gets 'Gross' for SMP; 'Power Play' to Come
Judy Quinn -- 1/26/98
Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart's next nonfiction project is tentatively titled The Frenzied Pursuit of the Blockbuster in the New Hollywood, to be published by St. Martin's in early winter 1998. Bart will track this coming summer's blockbusters, including Lethal Weapon IV, Armageddon and Godzilla -- "and all the egos on the line," he told PW. Editor-in-chief Bob Wallace acquired the book from agent Kathy Robbins. Robbins is also shopping around Bart's Power Play, a novel about gambling on Indian reservations whose film rights were already picked up by Paramount, with producer Robert Evans and Boogie Nights writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson attached. Bart at one point ran Paramount with Evans, but he told PW that though Evans helped him with the research, the book was submitted under a pseudonym to Paramount production president Michelle Manning for consideration. The ploy is a familiar one to Robbins, who also reps J Klein of Anonymous fame.
