The Girlfriend Bonanza
Daisy Maryles, with Dick Donahue -- 2/2/98
It was just about a year ago that Wildcat Canyon, a small Berkeley, Calif., publisher, hit the national bestseller charts with Girlfriends: Invisible Bonds, Enduring Ties. The catalyst was a segment on Oprah, during which the book industry's premier salesperson filled out The Girlfriends Keepsake Book with her best friend. Sales went through the roof, and the book hit all the national bestseller charts 15 months after its original November 1995 pub date. Girlfriends went back to press 25 times; copies in print total more than 890,000. The Keepsake Book is in its fifth printing, with just over 131,500 copies, and a third book, Girlfriends Talk About Men (Oct. 1997), has almost 78,000 copies in print. Girlfriends has been on PW's trade paperback chart for about six months and has been among the top 25 trade-paper bestsellers every week since last March.
