Bertelsmann As Bookseller
Herbert R. Lottman -- 3/2/98
In its principal club markets, Germany and France, Bertelsmann has been testing retail operations for some time (this is apart from Bertelsmann's own club shops, which recruit and sell to members). Under the Boulevard trade name, the German club has been trying out an arrangement under which it shares selling space with general booksellers in prime locations in medium-sized towns (there are three so far). In France, the France Loisirs club (a 50/50 association with Havas) has opened its own retail bookshops under the logo Place du Livre in Paris, Marseille and Nevers; results have encouraged management to draw up plans for another dozen -- still as a "test." There are no online operations yet, but Bertelsmann people in Europe think they are inevitable -- if only to be present on that market," as one club officer put it to PW.
