'Rights' Joins 'PW' News Coverage
-- 3/23/98
Beginning with this issue of PW, information on publishers' and agents' rights sales will be combined with news about new book deals, all to be published in a new column within News called Hot Deals. Background stories on new books will appear under the heading Book Beat, also in News. The Book News section and Paul Nathan's Rights column will no longer appear as separate departments.
As a result, Nathan, who has been compiling Rights in the magazine for many years, will work with Book News editor Judy Quinn on the new Hot Deals column; he will continue as a contributing editor for the magazine and will write stories and features.

The first Book Beat appears in this issue, on page 17. The column will cover stories behind new and upcoming titles, offering fresh and unusual angles on publishing stories. Suggestions for stories should be sent to Quinn.

As part of PW's continuing effort to deal with publishing issues in a timely way, a number of short, newsy features will appear each month at the beginning of the magazine's feature section. This week, an article on how Simon &Schuster's consumer publishing operation is doing appears on page 31.

Commenting on the changes, PW editor-in-chief Nora Rawlinson said, "Our goal is to give more timely coverage to the increasingly important area of book deals and rights, and more space to analysis of trends in the business."
