Trying to Make the Class
-- 4/6/98
Last spring HarperPaperback mounted an aggressive marketing campaign for Patrick Robinson's Nimitz Class, a techno-thriller that the publisher hoped would appeal to a large group of Tom Clancy fans. While it did hit a number of regional charts, it didn't make the national charts, though it came as close as #17 on PW's weekly list. Apparently the mass market paperback is having better luck, landing at #13 this week with more than 500,000 copies in print after three trips to press. Good news also for Robinson's next book, Kilo Class, which will soon be hitting the stores (PW's review of the HarperCollins title in this issue calls it "a sure hit for fans of military and adventure fiction"). Robinson will do an eight-city tour and there will be a 20-city national radio satellite tour. First printing for the hardcover is 150,000 copies.
