Cold Mountain Climbing
-- 7/6/98
Charles Frazier's first novel, Cold Mountain, is still racking up strong sales after more than a year on the national bestseller charts; it looks like the only thing that will topple the Atlantic Monthly title is the Vintage paperback, scheduled for national laydown on August 19. Meanwhile, the hardcover has 1.6 million copies in print after 25 trips to press (first printing was 25,000). Vintage is planning a 600,000-copy first printing, with reading group guides ready to go and major advertising set to include print, radio, transit and TV. The publisher reports that more than 4000 displays have been ordered by bookstores. Frazier will begin a 15-city reading tour in Portland, Maine, to coincide with the paperback's on-sale date.
