Hot Deals: About a 'Girl'
Judy Quinn -- 7/20/98
Publishers saw only two sample chapters, but the quality of them, combined, no doubt, with the author's literary pedigree, attracted plenty of interest in Girl, a proposed novel by Molly Jong-Fast, the 19-year-old daughter of writers Erica Jong and Jonathan Fast. Last week, agent William Clark accepted Villard's low-six-figure bid for the book, which will no doubt have insiders sifting for the truths in the teenager's sex-and-drugs coming-of-age fiction. Jong-Fast is no stranger to having a private life made public. Her mother's Megan's Book of Divorce was originally to have been called Molly's Book... until a lawsuit by Fast prevented it. Jong-Fast also toured with her mother for Jong's recent Inventing Memory: A Novel of Mothers and Daughters. Clark called Villard "the perfect house" to develop the writing of Jong-Fast, because acquiring editor Molly Doyle has worked on such similarly edgy work as Eve Ensler's Vagina Monologues.
