Amazon.com Offers Category Bestseller Awards
-- 8/17/98
Amazon.com has announced a monthly program of Category Bestseller Awards, recognizing the bestselling publishers and authors in each of 24 book genres.
The awards will reflect books that are most popular with buyers at the online bookseller's Web site each month, as reflected in volume of shipments over the previous 30 days. Mary Engstrom, Amazon.com's v-p of merchandising, said the company's bestseller lists, which embrace thousands of categories, have "unparalleled breadth and startling currency," and could be updated even on an hourly basis.

The monthly awards will be given initially to books in the following categories: arts and music; audiobooks; biography and memoir; business and investing; children's; computers and Internet; cooking, food and wine; health, mind and body; history; home and garden; horror; humor, comics and pop culture; literature and fiction; mysteries and thrillers; nonfiction; parenting and families; reference; religion and spirituality; romance; science and nature; science fiction and fantasy; sports and outdoors; travel; and young adult.

Engstrom said the new program will give authors and publishers "an unrivaled vantage point to gauge how their books are selling, within the appropriate genre, more accurately and more currently than they could find anywhere else."

Amazon.com also announced an agreement with software developer Intuit to be the exclusive bookseller on Quicken.com, Intuit's personal-finance website. The Amazon.com Associates program, which provides referral fees to sites channeling book purchasers to Amazon.com, now has more than 100,000 members.
