Orphan? Often!
-- 8/31/98
V.C. Andrews, in case you hadn't noticed, has been at it again. Since the overnight success of this author's debut, 1979's Flowers in the Attic, V.C. Andrews has had 22 worldwide bestsellers. There are now more than 75 V.C. Andrews books in print, published in 90 countries in 23 languages. In 1984 and 1985, she was America's #1 bestselling paperback original author -- and the amazing statistics go on and on. This summer Pocket Books published the Orphans series, four mass market titles (each of which commanded a 1.5 million first printing) that all became -- what else? -- national bestsellers. Of our last 16 mass market lists, in fact, 14 have featured a title from this megaselling quartet -- Butterfly, Crystal, Brooke and Raven. In November, Pocket will wrap up the series in an unusual way, with the simultaneous mass market and hardcover publication of Runaways, a novel that weaves the four stories together, according to the publisher, "in an unexpected and unforgettable fashion." Might this title, too, become a Runaway bestseller?
