New Heights to Scale
-- 8/31/98
After just one week on sale, Vintage's trade paperback edition of Cold Mountain is already climbing the bestseller charts. It debuts at #2 on our list, an especially strong showing following the Atlantic Monthly hardcover's 60-week tenure -- that edition dropped off our list just this week. After two printings, paperback copies in print total 65,000. Author Charles Frazier began his reading tour on the book's August 19 laydown date at the Bookland outlet in Portland, Maine. The event, which was co-sponsored by the Portland Public Library, drew a crowd of more than 400 -- a figure that was topped the following night when Frazier read to a crowd of 600 at the Coolidge Corner Theater in Brookline, Mass. (sponsored by the Booksmith). The coast-to-coast tour winds up just before Thanksgiving at the Miami International Book Fair.
