Angela At 100
-- 8/31/98
Break out the green beer: Angela's Ashes celebrates its 100th appearance on PW's nonfiction list -- 69 of those among the top five spots. After a remarkable 63 printings, Frank McCourt's Pulitzer Prize-winning memoir boasts 2.25 million copies in print. Scribner publicity director Pat Eisemann said, "No one now would believe that we started out with a 27,500 first printing, a meager publicity budget and a seven-city tour." As things turned out, McCourt's tour became a whirlwind affair -- and is still going on. As Eisemann puts it, "Frank is the Energizer author!" His tour schedule, she said, is 98 pages long and "reads like a who's who of media. We joke here that we're going to publish it with the title You Can't Be Home Again." McCourt has the following items noted on his dance card: an October article in Allure; an October 29 signing (with brother Malachy) at a New York City Barnes &Noble location to raise money for Share Our Strength, a charity that feeds the needy; a November reading engagement on the QE2; and the filming of his book this fall in Dublin.
