Hot Deals: D-Day Plus
John F. Baker -- 9/7/98
Saving Private Ryan has been good to World War II historian Stephen E. Ambrose -- who was an adviser on the widely admired Steven Spielberg movie. Not only has it brought new market life to several of his books (notably D-Day: June 6, 1944, currently a bestseller in its S&S/Touchstone trade paper edition), but it has also inspired movie interest in a couple of others. Brian Lipson at the Renaissance agency has sold Citizen Soldiers and Band of Brothers to Spielberg's DreamWorks, the latter as a vehicle for Ryan's Tom Hanks, who expressed particular interest. The producer attached to the deal is Mark Johnson, a former partner of director Barry Levinson (Wag the Dog).
