Fogelman Gets Own Imprint at Penguin Putnam
-- 9/14/98
Penguin Putnam Books for Young Readers president Douglas Whiteman announced last week that the unit has formed a new imprint, Phyllis Fogelman Books. Fogelman, who joined Dial Books for Young Readers in 1966, most recently served as president and publisher of that imprint. Fogelman will continue to report to Whiteman in her new post.
Although Fogelman said it has not yet been determined when her first books will appear, or how many titles will be released, she noted that she will continue to work with a number of her core authors and illustrators. Among those whose works will appear on her list are Mildred Taylor, Jean Van Leeuwen, Julius Lester, Jerry and Gloria Pinkney, Caralyn and Mark Buehner and Tom Feelings. Fogelman told PW she "had been thinking about doing something like this for about two years. I want to get back to hands-on publishing."

Whiteman said he plans to take his time in naming a successor to Fogelman, although he emphasized that "the plan going forward is to strengthen Dial." The imprint will publish about 75 titles this year, and Whiteman said he had no immediate plans about changing the direction of Dial.
