Rubin Pfeffer, former president of Harcourt Brace's trade publishing division, has been promoted to the newly created post of president of HarcourtOnline. In the new position, Pfeffer will be responsible for overseeing Harcourt's worldwide brand marketing and Internet initiatives.

According to Harcourt, Pfeffer will be in charge of developing the company's educational, training, testing, assessment and career counseling businesses on the World Wide Web under the umbrella of a global Harcourt brand.

A company spokesperson said that although Harcourt's different units have their own websites, Pfeffer's mandate is to establish Harcourt as a brand. HarcourtOnline will use the Internet to communicate the company's image, identify and develop new online markets, and coordinate the efforts of the company's business units using web-based infrastructure and technology.

Pfeffer will be based in Boston and will report to Jim Levy, president of Harcourt's Education and Lifelong Assessment divisions. Earlier this summer, Pfeffer's position as president of Harcourt's trade group was assumed by Dan Farley.
