William Flavell has joined Courier Corp. as a vice-president and executive vice-president of its National Publishing Company subsidiary. Flavell moves to Courier from R.R. Donnelley, where he was senior vice-president, international business development and general manager sales/marketing.

For the fiscal year ended September 26, 1998, Courier had total sales of $151.6 million, compared to $131.4 million in fiscal '97. Net income rose 79%, to $7.7 million. According to the printer's recently released 10-K filing, approximately half of the sales gain in fiscal '98 was due to its July 1997 acquisition of Book-mart Press. Sales to educational and religious publishers were also strong last year and offset lower sales to software customers. The company also added $2 million in sales from two newer initiatives -- its 1997 purchase of the Home School, a direct marketer of educational materials for home-based learning, and Copyright Management Services, which provides coursepacks and copyright clearance services to colleges and universities.
