Ingram Names New Execs at Lightning Print, Spring Arbor
Calvin Reid -- 1/10/00

Ingram Book Group announced several executive appointments last week, including naming Ed Marino the new president and CEO of Lightning Print, which points to the growing importance of print-on-demand services for the national book wholesaler. The new appointments come after a flurry of POD deals in 1999 between Ingram and Barnes & Noble; B&N's partner, POD publisher iUniverse; and Alibris, the out-of-print book service.

The wholesaler also named Youngsuk Chi, Ingram's COO, chairman of Lightning Print. Chi will continue as COO in addition to taking on additional responsibilities for new business development.

Janet McDonald, a former Athlon Sports Communication executive with experience in publishing and e-commerce, has been named v-p and general manager of Spring Arbor Distributors. She will report to Fran Salamon, president of Spring Arbor.

Ingram also named Steven W. Little, who has held a number of positions at Ingram since joining the firm in 1986, chief product group officer for the book group. Jim Kelly, previously v-p of sales for Sagebrush Learning Resources, has been named president of Ingram Library Services, a position previously held by Martin Keeley, who resigned late last month (News, Dec. 20, 1999). Wayne M. Keegan, formerly a senior v-p at Vanustar Corp., has been appointed chief human resources officer for the book group.

Keel Hunt, a spokesperson for Ingram, told PW that Larry Brewster remains COO of Lightning Print. Hunt noted that Marino was formerly president of Danka Services International, which, along with IBM, was one of the technical strategic partners in the launch of Lightning Press in 1997. He added that Marino, a former computer design engineer, "has worked with LP from the beginning and brings 25 years of technical expertise to the job."

Hunt attributed the rash of appointments to "a coincidence of opportunities. Business is growing, and this is a chance to bring a number of people into leadership positions."
