Ingenta Acquires UnCover
Judith Rosen -- 2/14/00

Ingenta, a U.K.-based firm specializing in online distribution of academic content, has acquired UnCover, an online database of 18,000 English-language periodicals based in Denver, from CARL Corp., a developer of digital technologies for libraries. As part of the arrangement, CARL and UnCover founder, chairman and owner Ward Shaw will join the Ingenta board. "The plan," he said, "is to integrate very different offerings to create a package for researchers."

Begun in 1988 as a CARL project and currently used in more than 1,000 public and academic libraries, UnCover was spun off as a separate company in 1993. Its addition will enhance Ingenta's own database capabilities. At present, the UnCover database contains descriptions of more than 8.8 million articles published since 1985. Ingenta's database offers access to more than one million professional and specialty publications.

The acquisition will also provide Ingenta (www.ingenta .com) with an automated alerting service, UnCover Reveal. UR e-mails the table of contents of selected periodicals to subscribers, and, in partnership with Academic Book Center, it also sends electronic announcements on the latest books published on a user's topics of interest.

No immediate changes in UnCover or Ingenta are anticipated over the next few months, according to Ingenta COO Christine Lamb, who emphasized the importance of continuity for UnCover users. Nevertheless, she noted that sales and marketing will likely be based in Ingenta's recently opened Boston office (News, Nov. 1, 1999)

Lamb told PW that the company has signed on seven new publishers in the U.K. in the past few months, bringing the total number of participating British publishers up to 30. Several agreements are pending with U.S. publishers.
