B&N and Borders Continue to Gro
-- 3/6/00

Barnes & Noble plans to open a two-story outlet at 555 12th St., N.W., in Washington, D.C., several blocks east of the White House, in a rejuvenating part of the capital's downtown. The 31,000-sq.-ft. store is part of a large building that includes such tenants as law firm Arnold & Porter, pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and accountant firm Deloitte & Touche. An ESPN Sports Zone restaurant will open soon in the building. The building was finished in 1995 but had trouble attracting retail tenants until now. This will be the second B&N in the district. The company also operates a B. Dalton in Union Station.

Borders plans to open at least two stores in August, one in Greeley, Colo., and the other in Kennesaw, Ga. Both stores will stock more than 150,000 book, music, video and periodical titles. The 23,000-sq.-ft. Greeley store, north of Denver, will be in the Elk Lakes Shopping Center and is the fifth Borders in Colorado. The 25,000-sq.-ft. Kennesaw store, near Marietta, will be in Town Center Commons and is the 11th Borders in the Atlanta metropolitan area.
