Grand Opening

It's time to throw open the doors on a new season, and this spring offers a tantalizing array of stories and subjects. Welcome back familiar names to fiction shelves: there are new page-turners by Lisa Scottoline and Patricia Cornwell, Robert B. Parker and John Sandford; John Saul creates terror for a college student who becomes the victim of classmates bored with more conventional sports; John Irving's bizarre tale features a TV journalist reporting from India; "Oprah-ized" authors Jacquelyn Mitchard, Melinda Haynes and Anita Shreve bare different forms of love; and William F. Buckley Jr. revisits the 1960s, complete with Elvis.

Wander over to the nonfiction section to find multiple titles on a variety of single themes. Food ranks high on the list, beginning with Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl's coming-of-age as a food writer in Comfort Me with Apples; in Typhoid Mary, Anthony Bourdain takes a tour of New York City restaurant kitchens at the turn of the century; and in The Last Days of Haute Cuisine, Patric Kuh examines the history of the American restaurant itself. Meanwhile, Peter Mayle continues his love affair with the gastronomic pleasures of France, and the Columbia University Press makes a serious study of salt. All those who didn't "go into the water" after seeing the movie Jaws, can now safely read about the actual 1916 episode that occurred off the New Jersey coast in two different books, Twelve Days of Terror from Lyons Press and Broadway's Close to Shore. Airline travel will be taking a hit after the recent fiasc s of getting from here to there. Three new books, Free Flight (Public Affairs), Why I Hate Flying (Texere) and Life in the Air (Roman &Littlefield), all address the growing problems of increased traffic, poor service and flight delays and perhaps offer some solutions. Finally, look for numerous titles to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor-- Time-Life's America's Darkest Day and Hyperion's Pearl Harbor: The Movie and the Moment, a tie-in to filmmaker Jerry Bruckheimer's Memorial Day blockbuster.

Notice that travel, computer, and gardening titles are not included in this listing but will be found in the upcoming issues of January 29, February 26 and March 19, respectively. In the meantime, browse through our Spring 2001 highlights.
