Carol Fenner, Newbery Honor—winning author and illustrator, died on February 16. She was 72.

Born in Almond, N.Y., Fenner moved to New York City after high school to study theater. She performed in a number of plays and appeared in commercials and movies before turning to illustration. After briefly working for an advertising agency, Fenner wrote and illustrated her first picture book, Tigers in the Cellar, which was published by Margaret K. McElderry at Harcourt in 1963.

Fenner continued to work with McElderry, and in 1996 won a Newbery Honor for Yolanda's Genius. Her final book, The King of Dragons, was published in 1998.
