As part of its effort to have more international representation on its supervisory board, Bertelsmann has appointed two Americans, Richard Sarnoff of Random House and John Joyce, senior v-p and chief financial officer of IBM, as members. In mid-May, Sarnoff became the first American to be elected chairman of the Bertelsmann Management Representative Committee.

Sarnoff, who will join the board July 1, is an executive v-p at Random House and president of Random House corporate development and Random House Ventures. He also oversees the company's new media and direct marketing efforts. The supervisory board monitors management of the company and reviews significant business transactions and strategies with the executive board.
