Jim Sachs, a technology and e-book pioneer, died of cancer on August 15. He was 47. Sachs was perhaps best known as a co-designer and patent holder of the Macintosh mouse. He also founded Virtual Press (which later became Softbook Press) and developed the Softbook device, an early e-book reading device that was acquired in 2000 by Gemstar. Earlier, Sachs was v-p and general manager of the technology group of Hasbro Inc., where he created its preschool multimedia software business and developed several popular software titles. He also held top managerial and product development positions at Worlds of Wonder. In addition, Sachs cofounded Personal Robotic Company and Elfin Technologies and was an original principal of what has become IDEO.
