The Canadian Heritage Department announced last week that it will distribute C$2.5 million ($1.6 million) to publishers who were caught in the bankruptcy of General Publishing Co. earlier this year. Under the guidelines, publishers can apply for up to 65% of the money owed them by GPC. The government plans to distribute the money over the next two months. Any publisher that receives the special funds will have that amount deducted from grants issued under the Book Publishing Industry Development Program over the next five years. The BPIDP pays Canadian publishers about C$28 million annually.
