Avon senior editor Sarah Durand signed a pair of New York tabloid journalists, Maggie Haberman of the New York Post and Jeanne MacIntosh of the Daily News, to write a swift mass market paperback original on the kidnapping and subsequent rescue of Utah teenager Elizabeth Smart that galvanized the country. She bought world rights directly from the two reporters, who have covered the story extensively in their papers and who have conducted many interviews with participants in the story, and plans to publish this summer. Meanwhile, it's reported that the Smart family is in its own talks with publishers about a possible book, and will decide soon on which way to go.
